Hanna Albina, or Hanzly as he is known, is a third generation horseman based in Lexington, Kentucky. He is the son of the respected international trainer Michael Albina, whose clients included Mahmoud Fustok’s Buckram Oak Farm. Hanzly’s early childhood was spent in Newmarket, England where he was exposed some of the most influential personalities on the European turf.
In 1987, Michael Albina accepted the General Manager position at Buckram Oak Farm and moved the family to Lexington. Hanzly (pronounced Huns-ly) again worked closely alongside his father and was immersed in all aspects of the renowned throughbred breeding and racing operation.
Hanzly continued his Buckram Oak apprenticeship while attending the University of Kentucky, where he earned a Bachelors of Science in Agricultural Economics. The diverse and multinational broodmare band at Buckram Oak was an ideal proving ground for Hanzly’s approach to breeding and mare management. He eventually worked his way up to manager under his father.
Hanzly was a major force off the farm as well. He spent summers working with the Buckram Oak racing stable in Florida and, at the behest of Mr. Fustok, was actively involved in the farm’s auction activities. Hanzly was front and center in Buckram Oak’s yearling inspection process that emphasized athleticism and conformation. The graduates of the Buckram Oak program during this era include Breeders’ Cup champion Silver Train, multiple Graded winner Najran, who equaled Dr. Fager’s North American mile record, international multiple Graded winner Diamond Stripes and Grade 1 winner Silver Wagon.
After Mr. Fustok’s passing, Hanzly headed up the Buckram Oak offshoot Four Roses Thoroughbreds. With Graded winners like Anak Nakal and Last Song Four Roses sprang to a Top 4 ranking on the U.S. owner standings. The Four Roses pinhooking operation excelled under Hanzly as well with a $310,000 yearling bringing $1,000,000 as a two-year-old.
Hanzly partnered with Ron Blake for a time operating a boutique consignment company. He met his current partner Nick Sallusto in Dubai when both had clients with prominent runners on the 2008 World Cup card. The powerful Sallusto & Albina team offers a full array of bloodstock and evaluation services.
Together Nick and Hanzly have a written a book full of success stories like unbeaten multiple graded stakes winner Kantharos and the Grade 1-winning Violence. Both are now exciting young stallions standing in Kentucky.
