Yearling Buy Dark Templar Impresses in Debut

Dark Templar added to an already stellar day for Newtown Anner Stud, who recently joined the ownership group of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) heroine Caledonia Road.

Installed the 4-1 third choice in this robust field of 10, Dark Templar was up to prompt the early lead set by Pop Culture and the duo raced through opening splits of :22.03 and :46.31. Ready to take over while three wide rounding the home turn, Dark Templar inched clear through the stretch and was 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Royal Creed on the line.

A son of leading sire Tapit, Dark Templar was purchased for $475,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September Yealring sale on behalf of Newton Anner by bloodstock agents Nick Sallusto and Hanzly Albina. The duo also brokered the deal on Caledonia Road. Another private purchase, Beach Patrol, was runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, making it an especially memorable Breeders’ Cup day for clients of one of Kentucky’s leading bloodstock agencies.

Dark Templar is trained by Brendan Walsh and is out of the Storm Cat mare Hurricane Cat, a granddaughter of the Hall of Fame mare Personal Ensign.
