July 12 – A yearling by Kantharos commanded $130,000 at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton July sale.
Jerry Durant signed the ticket for the bay filly, who was bred and raised by Stonestreet Farm. Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck’s Summerfield agency acted as consignor.
Kantharos was purchased by Sallusto & Albina at the 2009 Keeneland September sale for $80,000 and later resold for $250,000 to Stonestreet at following year’s OBS March auction.
Racing in the famed Stonestreet crimson and yellow colors, Kantharos quickly develeoped into a major juvenile. After an 11 3/4-length debut victory, the son of Lion Heart then dominated the Bashford Manor S. (G3) and Saratoga Special S. (G2) in what was to be his final start.
Fast out of the gate at stud
Kantharos retired to Ocala Stud in Central Florida for the 2011 breeding season and his stallion career has closesly mirrored his racing in terms of early success. Graded winners X Y Jet and Mr Jordan were among his first-crop stars and subsquent crops have yielded more. That kind of success was noted by Central Kentucky breeders and Kantharos just completed his first season at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in Lexington.
The $130,000 Fasig-July filly is a member of Kantharos’ penultimate Florida crop.
