Sallusto & Albina at the Breeders’ Cup

Kentucky bloodstock agents Nick Sallusto and Hanzly Albina have had tremendous success in thoroughbred racing’s signature events. The Breeders’ Cup is no exception. The pair have purchased three previous Breeders’ Cup champions and two additional runners up. This year’s Del Mar edition features two more private purchases who rank as strong contenders.

Beach Patrol was purchased privately last June for clients James Covello, Head Plains Partners, LLC and Sheep Pond Partners. He’s since emerged as one of North America’s top grass performers with victories in the 2016 Secretariat S. (G1) and the Arlington Million (G1) and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1) in 2017. He’s been installed as the 4-1 second choice in the November 4 Breeders Cup Turf.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies contender Caledonia Road is a more recent addition. Nick and Hanzly purchased a piece of the promising filly for Newton Anner Stud after her strong second in the October 8 Frizette S. (G1). The Quality Road miss drew post 12 for the Juvenile Fillies and will have the services of Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith.

Also in the Breeders’ Cup starting gates are a pair of contenders sired by Sallusto & Albina yearling purchases.

Bucchero earned his way into the Turf Sprint with an upset win in the October 7 Woodford S. (G2) at Keeneland. He’s a son of Kantharos, who was purchased by Nick and Hanzly at the 2009 Keeneland September Yearling sale and later resold to Stonestreet Farm as a two-year-old. Kantharos became an unbeaten multiple stakes winner and now stands at Hill ‘n’ Dale farm in Central Kentucky.

Standing alongside Kantharos at Hill ‘n’ Dale is Grade 1 winner Violence, a purchase at Keeneland September 2010. He’s now one a leading first crop sire with a trio of stakes winners, including Encumbered, winner of the Del Mar Juvenile Turf. That effort earned him a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf starting gate. He’ll break from post 9 under Mario Gutierrez.
