August 7 – Hip #34, a stunning filly by Curlin, commanded a final bid of $750,000 on night one of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling sale. The price was the highest for a filly during the opening session.
Juddmonte Farms, who have been more active at American yearling sales in recent years and have scored big with Arrogate, purchased the filly.
“She’s a real classic filly, a real athlete,” Juddmonte Farm’s Garrett O”Rourke said after the hammer fell. “Looks like something that could be a real (Kentucky) Oaks filly and, thinking long term, a mate for Arrogate.”
The dark bay miss was bred and raised by Sallusto & Albina for longtime clients Newton Anner Stud. She is out of the Bluegrass Cat daughter Purple Cat, a sister to a pair of stakes winners including Grade 1 winner Sky Diva. Purple Cat was purchased at the 2009 Saratoga Sale for $550,000.
A little further back in the pedigree are runners like current leading female sprinter Finley’sluckycharm and multiple Grade 1 winner Pure Clan, a Sallusto & Albina private purchase.
The big auction result capped a gratifying two days in Saratoga for Sallusto & Albina clients. Across Union Avenue the day prior, Joseph Bulger’s Royal Inheritance scored a brave Allowance victory, her fourth triumph in five starts.
