May 27 – Trooper John, a Sallusto & Albina yearling purchase, stormed to victory in the Western Canada Handicap.
Making his 2017, the son of Colonel John sat the stalking trip in third while Bar No Q and odds-on favorite Rock Victor dueled early. Trooper John still had three lengths to make up at the top of the stretch but accelerated willingly and hit the wire a half-length ahead of Bar No Q. The final time was 1:10 flat for the six furlongs.
The win was the third stakes score in a row for the ultra-consistent three-year-old. He closed out his sophomore season with a triumph in the Winnipeg Futurity and a dominant 8 ½-length romp in the Canadian Juvenile.
Trooper John was purchased by Sallusto & Albina at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling sale for longtime clients Riverside Racing Stables. Nick and Hanzly also assist in managing the horse’s racing career and have guided the gelding to 4-2-1 record in seven starts.
More Stakes Success
The Sallusto & Albina/Riverside Racing Stables team also had blackytpe success with Hold the Giant in the race prior. The son of Hold Me Back earned the place spot in the co-featured Journal Handicap.
A 2015 Ocala Breeders Sales August Yearling sale purchase, Hold the Giant was also a Stakes winner last season, strolling to a two-length victory in the Edmonton Juvenile Stakes. The Journal H. was his 2017 debut and he’s now won or placed in six of his nine career outings.
Both Trooper John and Hold the Giant are trained by Tim Rycroft who is winning with nearly 50% of his starters at the current Northlands Park meeting.
