Despite being last after the leaders walked through a half-mile in :50.26 seconds, Trooper John rallied to win the $50,000 Ky Alta for 3-year-olds.
It was the fourth straight stakes win for the son of Colonel John, who’s never been off the board in eight career outings. He won a pair of juvenile stakes to close out his 2016 season and captured the May 27 Western Canada H. in his 2017 debut.
The expected shape of the race changed dramatically when The All Button broke slowly and was last early. The All Button was expected to set a fast pace in the one-mile race. Instead, Teeplay and Bar No Q posted extremely slow fractions while Trooper John, with Keishan Balgobin aboard, was traling the field.
After splitting horses approaching the stretch turn Trooper John made a strong three-wide move around the turn. He had plenty of momentum turning for home and won decisively by three parts of a length.
Trooper John is trained by Tim Rycroft and owned by Riversedge Racing Stables Ltd. He was purchased for Riversedge by Sallusto & Albina bloodstock agents at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern Fall Yearling sale for $21,000. He’s earned over four times that now.
Two races later Hold the Giant grabbed third in the Spangled Jimmy S. for the Sallusto & Albina/Riversedge Racing team. Purchased by Nick and Hanzly out of the 2014 OBS August yearling auction, the Hold Me Back gelding won the Edmonton Juvenile during his two-year-old season. He earned blacktype for the fourth time is career in the Spangled Jimmy.
